4x4 Snorkel Fitting Instructions for a Scintex Nissan Patrol GQ Y60 / Ford Maverick

4x4 Snorkel Fitting Instructions for a Scintex Nissan Patrol GQ Y60 / Ford Maverick

Purchased through the Scintex Online store December 2013

Tools Required:
89mm (3 1/2") Hole Saw
Hole Punch
Step Drill up to 16mm
Rivot Gun
Paint Brush and Primer (rust guard)
Painters Tape
Urethane Sealant (Sikaflex is quite good, also other sealants which allow some movement and have at least mild heat resistance)

Note:
This install was performed on a TB42 Carby Ford Maverick 1993 Model.

Preparation:
1) Remove the inner guard liner by removing the plastic clips. You may also need to remove the side wheel arch guard (on this install that side arch guard was missing to begin with). You will only need to remove the first half or so of the liner. Photo 1.
2) Remove the air duct between the inner guard and the pre cleaner. Photo 2 & 3.
3) On this model there was a cowling inside the inner guard which would prevent the snorkel connecting to the airbox. This was removed by plying off with a screw driver. Remember to prime any exposed areas of metal. Photo 4 & 5.

Apply the Template:
1) The template is applied with writing facing out. Put the right edge all the way to the back of the side panel. Align the top of the template with the top of the side panel. The aerial cut out should fit neatly around the aerial.
2) Tape the template in place. Photo 6
3) With the snorkel, check that the holes make sense in their current location.
4) Fit the mounting bracket to the snorkel with the two bolts provided and make sure the A pillar mounting bracket will reach the A Pillar given the hole locations. This step is very important and will highlight any errors!
5) Mark the hole locations with a marker onto the side panel.  Photo 7.

Drilling the holes:
1) Around each hole apply painters tape where the drill will be cutting. Photo 8.
2) Using an 89mm hole saw cut the main snorkel hole.
3) Drill the mounting holes out with the step drill. Start at 12mm and expand to 16mm if necessary to get the studs to fit. Remember there is sometimes up to 1% variation in rotomoulded products and this is why the template is a guide only.
Photo 9.

Marking the Upper Bracket Location:
1) Fit the studs to the snorkel and push the snorkel into the holes so it sits flat.
2) With the bracket fitted to the snorkel mark the location of the 3 pot rivet holes. Photo 10.
3) Drill these holes to the size of the 3 rivets supplied.

Priming:
1) Using a suitable primer, in this case Rust Guard Enamel was used, prime all holes. This also applies to any holes or cuts made from this step on.

Bolt on the Snorkel:
1) Locate the snorkel and studs into their holes so the snorkel fits flush on the guard. Using a pot rivet gun, rivet the upper bracket to the door pillar. Photo 11.
2) Using the large washers and Nylock nuts provided secure the snorkel studs to the side panel.

Attach Snorkel Head:
1) Slide air ram snorkel head onto the top of the snorkel pipe and attach using one of the worm clamps provided. Photo 12.

Connecting the Snorkel to the Existing Air Duct:
1) Using the existing air duct mark the 3 mounting holes onto the aluminium (triangular) adaptor plate provided. Drill these to the size of the 3 bolts provided. Photo 13.
2) Using sealant join the existing air duct to the adaptor plate and bolt into the guard using the existing bolt holes. The bolts will hold the two plates together and into the guard. Photo 14 & 15.
3) Using the short rubber connecting tube and two hose clamps connect the snorkel to the metal adaptor plate. Remember to seal all connections. Photo 16
4) I'd also take this opportunity to seal all other pipes between the snorkel and the air cleaner. For this vehicle the existing ducting from the pre cleaner to the air filter was rotted out and replaced with a 3.5" concertina tube. Photo 17.

Your snorkel install is now complete! Photo 18.
